February 6, 2013A strong defensive effort propelled UCF to a 60-58 win against league-leader Southern Miss on Wednesday.
The Golden Eagles (18-5, 7-1) came into the game riding a 10-game winning streak and an undefeated record in Conference USA.
Southern Miss held a five-point advantage with five minutes remaining, but UCF proceeded to clamp down defensively on their way to a 6-0 run to take the lead. A pair of Isaiah Sykes free throws with 14.6 seconds left broke the tie to give UCF a two-point lead, and Keith Clanton blocked the Eagles' ensuing three-point attempt.
The quartet of Tristan Spurlock (18 points), Calvin Newell (13), Sykes (12) and Matt Williams (11) each scored in double-figures. Clanton was limited offensively, but swatted seven blocks.
With the win, the Knights improved to 16-6 and 6-2 in C-USA.
UCF hosts East Carolina on Saturday.
