October 9, 2013The UCF basketball team will sport a unique new look for their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference.
A couple months after unveiling their new blacktop court, the Knights showed off new pinstriped jerseys during Monday's media day event.
The look immediately draws comparisons to the original Orlando Magic jerseys, which head coach Donnie Jones says was the inspiration.
"We were looking for something different like we did with the court," Jones said. "How do we brand our program? I kind of liked the old Orlando Magic look that they had back in the Shaq days. I thought that might be appealing to the Orlando community, so we kind of went with that look thinking that would be something neat because I haven't seen too many programs across the country wearing pinstripes."
As part of the schools' logo streamlining efforts, the design features the "stacked" UCF logo which is now the primary mark for all athletic teams. The logo and numerals are a reflective gold material.
"I like the jerseys," senior Isaiah Sykes said. "It's different. Everybody kind of has the same thing from Nike. Our style is a little different from everyone else."
Senior Tristan Spurlock says the pinstripes take him back to his childhood when he would watch his favorite player on television.
"I was a big Tracy McGrady fan growing up," Spurlock said. "I remember watching him on Christmas Day vs. LeBron and (the Magic) were wearing the white pinstripes. That's why I wear No. 1 too. I love them. It goes with the new court too. Nobody has that blacktop like we do. I feel like we're on a playground."
Fans can get their first look at the men's and women's 2013-14 squads next Saturday, Oct. 19 during "Blacktop Madness." The free event, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature an intrasquad scrimmage and autograph session.
Opening Knight is set for Friday, Nov. 8 with a doubleheader as the women start things off at 6 p.m. vs. Central Connecticut which will be followed by the men's opener at 8:30 vs. Tampa.
