Patti wants to talk to UCF

Former Dr. Phillips quarterback Nick Patti has left Boise State and is interested in a possible transfer to UCF.

WFTV and the Orlando Sentinel first broke the news of his departure early Tuesday evening. His father, Ed Patti, told the Sentinel's Chris Hays that his son was granted a full release, but declined to comment on a possible destination.

Patti chose the Broncos over the Knights out of high school, making it easy to speculate he might be thinking about a return home. Later on Tuesday night, Boise State, via Director of Media Relations Max Corbet, confirmed Patti does have his sights set on the Knights.

Corbet released the following statement to several Boise media outlets:

"Our understanding is that Nick is not returning to Boise State. Nick's father contacted us and asked for permission to contact the University of Central Florida. We have granted permission for him to only contact Central Florida."

A redshirt freshman in 2013, Patti saw limited action as Boise's third-string quarterback, completing eight passes for 63 yards.

The 5-foot-10 Patti set records for yards and touchdowns while at Dr. Phillips, leading the Panthers on an undefeated run in 2010 before falling in the state championship game.

"I just figure out how to win the game," Patti said during his recruitment. "As far as my skill set goes, I think my ability to move around is my best attribute. Not only move around with my legs, but also do so in the pocket to find the throwing lanes. I just find a way to get it done."

Patti was offered by UCF in the spring before his senior year. At the time, it was second offer.

"(UCF) told me they offered me because they know I can get it done," Patti said in April 2011. "I've been a proven winner at the position. Our offense is really similar to what UCF does. Coach O'Leary told me that I can plug into what they do and get it done at that level. He has confidence that I fit into their system and can really make a difference."

Later in the spring, Patti committed to Boise State after landing an offer from the Broncos. One key reason was the strong relationship he had developed with Boise State head coach Chris Petersen, who last month left to take the head coaching job at Washington.

UCF will have a new starting quarterback in 2014 as redshirt junior Blake Bortles recently declared for the NFL Draft. The Knights have three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: Sophomore Justin Holman, redshirt freshman Pete DiNovo and true freshman Tyler Harris, who enrolled earlier this month.

Patti would have to sit out the upcoming season if he transfers to another FBS school. The only scenario where he would be immediately eligible is if he was granted a hardship waiver by the NCAA. It's unknown at this time whether that's a potential option.
