UCF among finalists for 2014 power forward
UCF's 2014 basketball recruiting class could soon grow to include a talented in-state 6-foot-8 power forward.
Terrell Miller, who attends Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, will announce his decision Thursday between a final group of UCF, Georgia and Florida Gulf Coast. DePaul, Florida A&M, LSU, San Francisco and Wichita State were among his earlier offers.
"He'll be committing on Thursday, which is his birthday," ACD assistant coach Antwain Tennell said.
ACD features a talented roster with three other seniors headed to other Division I colleges: Brandone Francis (Florida), Dante Buford (Oklahoma) and Nate Mason (Minnesota). Miller was named MVP of the group, who helped ACD win their seventh state championship.
"Terrell led our team and had 24 double-doubles this year," Tennell said. "Against Oak Hill he went for 23 (points) and 14 (rebounds). He had 29 and 17 against Sunrise Christian, a game that was on ESPN. The kid was just a warrior for us. If the game was on the line, Terrell wanted the ball, or if they had a 7-footer he wanted to guard him man-to-man. He's one of those kids that brought it every night. A warrior. Great kid. Great teammate."
Miller's skills make him perfect to be a stretch four in college.
"He's great on defense and can score in various ways," Tennell said. "He rebounds the ball very well. He's deceptively fast. Very quick. He moves faster than you think he does."
Miller was in Orlando on Monday for an unofficial visit to UCF's campus.
"I know he enjoyed it very much," Tennell said. "I've got a great relationship with Donnie Jones. I knew him when he was at Florida. Donnie is a good guy, a life coach in addition to basketball. He teaches morals. I trust him. Same with (assistant coach) Tim Thomas. They're all good guys down there."
UCF's 2014 class already includes guards B.J. Taylor and Adonys Henriquez, both of whom were recently named finalists for the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Basketball award, given annually to the top player in the state.
Miller played with Taylor and Henriquez at the recent Senior Showcase All-Star Game in Orlando. The trio were the standout performers for Team Florida, who defeated Team USA 107-99. Taylor was named MVP with 17 points, six assists and four rebounds, while Miller actually led the team in points and rebounds with 21 and 13, respectively. Henriquez scored 11 points with three assists and two rebounds.
The spring signing period begins April 16.
