Fast rising DE set for UCF visit

Kelvin Lucky moved from Nigeria to the United States a year and a half ago to further his education for hopes of a better life.

He never expected to play football, let alone become one of the nation's most intriguing prospects with offers from several elite schools. But that's exactly what's happened in the span of about five months.

The lean and athletic 6-foot-6, 230-pound Lucky attends Edgewood Academy in Elmore, Ala., just outside Montgomery. He played both defensive line and tight end his first season playing football.

"I didn't know much about the game when I came to the United States," Lucky said. "In Nigeria, I would play soccer. At first I was scared, I didn't want to get hurt. I said I'm going to give it a try, let me play. I was surprised. It's made me a prospect all over the country."

Slowly but surely, schools began taking notice. His offer list now includes UCF, Vanderbilt, Texas, California, UCLA, Troy, South Alabama, Georgia State and Arkansas State among others.

Scott Frost's new UCF staff offered around Christmas. A few days ago, he confirmed an official visit to Orlando for this upcoming weekend.

"The coach from UCF (Erik Chinander) says I'm a good athlete and would be good at any position," Lucky said. "He says he watched my team and was real impressed especially since I've only been a football player for a few months. He loved my film and would like to give me an opportunity."

The Knights are recruiting Lucky as a defensive end.

"I'm learning more about UCF," Lucky said. "I know everything is new there. They have a new coaching staff. I know I'll learn more when I get there on the 15th."

He has two more visits set - Vanderbilt on Jan. 22 and Texas on Jan. 29. He says it's possible he squeezes in visits to Florida and Mississippi State.

"I would say my options are open," Lucky said. "My family doesn't have a lot of money to fly and the NCAA rules say they can pay for my flight ticket, so we're trying to consider the schools that are closer so we can drive."

Lucky says he'll have a better idea of what he wants in a school after he takes his visits. Wherever he goes, he says he's just thankful to have the opportunity to receive a scholarship.

"I never thought about that when I came to America," he said. "I just wanted to come here to get an education and get a better life. I'm honored to have this opportunity."
