Mayfield pumped to be a Knight

Dontay Mayfield has never wavered in his commitment to UCF.
The Miami (Fla.) Gulliver Prep wide receiver became one of the first players to commit last summer and then stayed solid through the tumultuous season that eventually led to the coaching change which brought Scott Frost to Orlando.

Other players may have continued to entertain other schools, but Mayfield simply wasn't interested.
On Wednesday, he was able to meet one of his new coaches face-to-face. Troy Walters, who most recently served as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Colorado, visited with Dontay and his mother.
"It actually wasn't my first time meeting him," Mayfield said. "My first meeting with Coach Walters was actually last spring when he was at Colorado. He was recruiting me for them. So once he got hired at UCF, I was already familiar with him."
After the home visit, Mayfield is even more excited.
"Tonight we talked about what UCF expects from me," Mayfield said. "He also talked about the offense. How they're going to switch up practice. Things are going to be a lot faster, they're going to play music in practice. Guys are going to enjoy everything that we do. He was also telling me Coach Frost is going to make a couple phone calls and get us some new gear, some new jerseys, some new helmets. He laid out everything. Talked about the college lifestyle. He told me to come in focused, willing to compete and be ready to outwork everybody. Get my feet wet my freshman year so I can play early.
"Everything feels a lot better by speaking to (Walters) tonight and especially with them retaining Coach Beckton and Coach Fisher. Those are my main guys, the two guys I've established my relationship with. With UCF keeping those guys that makes everything better for me. I feel really comfortable. I'm pumped."
Frost will be implementing the same offense they've been running at Oregon for years. Mayfield loved what he heard.
"(Walters) told me they're going to be up-tempo," Mayfield said. "They want to catch the defense off balance. It'll be a lot faster, a lot smoother. He knows I can play outside and knows I can play slot. He's comfortable with using me at any position. He was just saying he's expecting a lot out of me. They're going to utilize me in a way that helps the team."
His official visit is now set for Jan. 15.
"That's when all the commits will be visiting," Mayfield said. "(Frost) wants all the commits to take a visit on the same day so everybody gets to know each other and start bonding, start establishing that relationship. I've already been talking to Adrian Killins, Bryon Brown and Kwon Williams. I'm trying to get all the commits together on a group chat."
His other offers included Cincinnati, Duke, FAU, FIU, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, NC State, Rutgers, USF, Syracuse, Temple, Virginia and Wisconsin. Illinois and NC State have checked back in this month, seeing if he had any interest in giving them another look.
"I'm not really worried about those guys," Mayfield. "My focus is on UCF."
To that end, Mayfield is ready to do big things after he arrives next summer.
"I want to play as a true freshman and be a freshman All-American," Mayfield said. "To do that, you've got to work hard and bust your butt. I'm willing to do it. I'm always willing to go all out and go that extra mile to be great."
