UCF offensive coordinator Troy Walters called the 61 points scored vs. FIU a "good start," but still sees plenty of room for improvement before they head into Friday's game against Memphis.
"You want to play with energy and passion and I think we did that (against FIU)," Walters said. "Everybody got to play. Everybody made some plays. It was a good confidence game. Younger guys made some plays."
Nearly everything clicked in the passing game (13 players in total had receptions for 439 yards), though Walters would like to see better numbers from the run game. Collectively, UCF rushed for 148 yards, led by Jawon Hamilton's 56 yards on 12 carries.
"We've got to run the ball better," Walters said. "We're close. We've just got to finish our blocks. We got on our blocks, got on our man, just didn't finish. The hole was there, but then the hole closed. The backs have the trust the opening is there and hit it."
In regards to Memphis, Walters says they'll face a defense that is quite similar to UCF's in terms of scheme.
"It's multiple up front," Walters said. "They'll show three down, four down (linemen). It's an attacking defense. They're going to pressure you. They try to force turnovers. Create havoc up front. They leave their corners on an island. They've got a pretty good secondary. Athletic. Kind of a mirror image of our defense as they are similar in a lot of the things they do. I think going against our defense in fall camp will help. We can't turn the ball over. They've got an explosive offense. We've got to protect the ball. We've got to get first downs. When we get in the red zone, we've got to score because their offense is explosive. What we saw last week is not who they are. We've got to bring our A game."
