Louisiana DB loved UCF trip

Port Allen (La.) defensive back Deven Hammond stopped by UCF on Monday after participating with the Louisiana Bootleggers at this past weekend's IMG National 7-on-7 tournament in Bradenton.
On the Knights' radar since the spring, Hammond was encouraged by the coaches to make the trip over to Orlando.

"I'm staying in Florida until Tuesday so Coach Lorenzo Costantini and Coach Kirk Callahan wanted me to come by," Hammond said. "Oh man, I loved it at UCF. It was a real nice campus. The best part about it is everything is so close. Some schools you've got to go off campus to get to your dorm or this and that, but they don't even have dorms. They have apartments. You get your own apartment. The practice field is right there, the indoor field, offices, game field. Everything is so close. At some schools that stuff could be like across the highway."
Hammond doesn't have an offer, but UCF said they would continue to evaluate him for one.
"They're only taking two or three DBs in this class," Hammond said. "They were telling me I'm up there on a list. The way they rank their players on their recruiting board is first tier, second tier and third tier. First tier are the guys they offer right off the bat. Second tier are players who get an offer if a player they want takes too long or they commit to another school. Third tier has to work their way up to get to that next level status. They said I'm tier two."
UCF is also recruiting his teammate, Marcus Keyes.
"That's my boy," Hammond said. "He didn't get a chance to make it to the camp they had, but I told Coach Zo I was going to make sure I'm going to get him down there before the summer is over."
The Louisiana Bootleggers will compete at an upcoming camp at South Alabama and Hammond will later attend invite-only camps at Alabama (July 13) and Texas (July 18). Schools that have been in contact include Oregon, Arizona, TCU, Louisiana Tech, Florida, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Louisville and Texas A&M.
He transferred from Brusly to Port Allen earlier this year.
"This year I'm playing a big role on the team," Hammond said. "I'm going to be playing quarterback, wide receiver and I might even get in the backfield. I play safety, corner and returner. We're looking for a great season and win the state championship. My teammates are great players. Last year they were kind of young, but this year we return seven starters on defense and 11 on offense. I'm just ready to play ball."
