It's always a positive to come away with a win, but offensive coordinator Troy Walters sees plenty of room for improvement following UCF's season-opening victory against South Carolina State. Walters previews the upcoming game at No. 5 Michigan as well.
What were your impressions of how your offense looked in the first game?
"We're happy with a victory. You never take winning for granted. We're pleased, thrilled, happy that we got the win. But going back over the tape, we were a little sloppy. A little sloppy. We really weren't on our game all across the board. Execution has to pick up. We've got a big challenge ahead of us this week, so we've got to improve this week in practice and go out and execute better, play by play, man by man, next week."
It looked like Justin Holman took a lot of hits in that game. How concerned are you about his protection in this game?
"You're concerned any time the quarterback gets hit. They were doing some things that we weren't really ready for. He's tough. That's what you love about Justin is that when he gets hit, he's going to bounce back up and get ready for the next play. We definitely have to make sure we take some of the hits off of him so he can last a whole season."
Do you feel like you left some plays on the field with players almost breaking open but didn't quite open?
"We were close. We tell the guys in this offense that 11 guys have to do their job. If one guy is off, then the play is not going to work. That was the case on Saturday for a lot of the plays. One guy was off. A throw, route, protection. We got to put it all together. We've got to execute better. That's what we're preaching this week in practice. Do your job each play."
