UCF sees big potential in Kendrick Wilson.
The 6-foot-5, 235-pound athlete has been a standout basketball player during his high school career and decided to join the football team earlier this spring, focusing on defensive end. During the evaluation period college coaches took notice, including UCF defensive coordinator Randy Shannon. His first offer came from FIU, then Illinois.
Wilson's UCF offer was made official on Saturday night during his visit for "Knight Splash." He committed on the spot.
"The main reasons I decided to commit was because I love the coaching atmosphere," Wilson said. "They have one of the best defensive coordinators in college football in Randy Shannon. I've watched them practice and I really liked that too. The campus feels like home."
Legendary Miami-area scout Larry Blustein told Chris Hays of the Orlando Sentinel that Wilson has "amazing" upside and he believes he can be a "tremendous player" once he learns the ins and outs of playing football.
"(The UCF coaches) said they liked my length, speed and athleticism," Wilson said. "They were very excited when I told them I was ready to commit."
The situation is not unlike that of incoming UCF freshman defensive end Dallaz Corbitt, also a basketball player who picked up football his senior season. In just a few short months, Corbitt became recognized as one of the top players in his home state of South Carolina.
Wilson was one of two commits for UCF this weekend, joining Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood tight end Cornelius Forrest, Jr.
